  • Kefalonia

    Things to do - general

Kefalonia is one of the largest islands of Greece and part of the seven islands of the Eptanese island complex in the Ionian Sea in western Greece. Like all the islands of the Ionian Sea, Kefalonia combines beautiful beaches, a green environment across its area and interesting routes between the picrturesque villages and settlements.
Argostoli is the capital town of the island and holds one third of the total population of approximately 40,000 inhabitants.
Kefalonia has an interesting history that begins in the ancient years with a great archaeological significance and rises up to the era of Venetian and Roman rule in the Middle Ages. Its guests have the opportunity to visit the traditional village of Fiskardo and Assos, which maintain a very charactersitic architecture and offer a unique by the sea experience with the small shops and the tavernas with the local delicacies.

    Sports and nature

Kefalonia is well known for its endangered loggerhead turtle population, which nest on many beaches along the south coast of the island. A small population of the endangered Mediterranean monk seal, Monachus monachus, also lives around the island's coast, especially on parts of the coast which are inaccessible to humans due to the terrain. Caves on these parts of the coast offer ideal locations for the seals to give birth to their pups and nurse them through the first months of their lives. The European pine marten is known to live on the island. Over 200 species of birds have been spotted on the island.

Argostoli is the capital town of Kefalonia, where visitors may find interesting choices in food and drinks in the local tavernas and bars, although the island is considered to be of a moderate nightlife. Make sure to visit Fiskardo and Assos for a meal by the sea at the beautiful tavernas full of local delicacies and specialties.

    Culture and history

Kefalonia holds a very interesting history background from the early ancient years up to the Middle Ages when it was conquered by the Venetians who left remarkable works of art and culture. The local houses are designed with an outstanding architectural style and are characteristic in the Ionian Sea. Visitors should make sure to ask about the local myth and the ongoing archaeological surveys on ancient sites from the Paleolithic era to the Venetian era.
